Waves
Waves come with mixed feelings for some. They can be deadly and they can be calming. I have sat and relaxed to the sound of the lapping waves on the beachside and been caught in the crushing waves unable to swim out.
Have you ever been caught in an undertow or overtaken by waves? It can be frightening and feels impossible to pull yourself out. Your options are to calm yourself and try to float, swim with the current not against, or someone needs to pull you out.
When waves come at you in life, it’s the same way! Your options are to calm down, swim with the chaos, or ask for help! The more you fight against the waves, the more you panic and the less willing you are to receive help, the more it feels impossible to break out.
The common saying is, “God never gives you more than you can handle,” but that is not entirely true. We have all been in situations where are not strong, not capable, or not prepared enough. Even Jesus had His moment of being overwhelmed by the burdens He was facing. See Mark 14: 34-36. When Jesus couldn’t bear the weight of the crushing waves, He went to His Father.
In the same way, when we are in these situations, we should go to God in prayer asking for His help and His will be done. This is swimming with the current.
I love Joshua 1:9. “Have I not commanded you? Chazak! Be strong! Do not be terrified or dismayed, for Adonai your God is with you wherever you go.”” Joshua 1:9 TLV. This verse doesn’t say “be calm,” but instead to “be strong. God is with you.” This strength can be physical strength, but I see it as mental strength. When we let our minds weaken, anxiety, fear, and chaos erupt. While our minds remain strong, calmness and determination exist.
Finally, get help! No matter what it is, there are always people who can help! “My help comes from Adonai, Maker of heaven and earth.” Psalms 121:2 TLV
So when the waves come, take time, let the lull of them calm you, and remember there are ways out!
